Applied Learning or Fine Arts strives to provide students with opportunities in engaging activities that will generate interest, spark passion, increase application of skills and knowledge, and facilitate communities that cultivate productive, civically-minded members of society. Applied Learning for elementary students focuses on six areas: Civic Engagement, Music & Performing Arts, Physical Education, STEM & Computer Science, and Visual Arts.
Supporting young people in creative learning and artistic endeavors ensures they will be more engaged and enriched in all aspects of their lives. The presence of the arts and artists in society is a vital component of a functioning democracy.
The primary goal of the Arts program is to enable students to develop their minds and intellectual capabilities using all forms of creative intelligence.
Creativity and self-expression are nurtured allowing students to solve problems and think critically. Through an integrated, interdisciplinary approach, the arts provide a safe environment for the evolution and resolution of ideas. Students are challenged to be active participants in a program with high expectations.
A Media Special provides essential benefits for elementary students by building early literacy skills, promoting a love of reading, and teaching foundational research and technology skills. It offers a supportive, inclusive environment where children learn how to navigate books, digital resources, and information safely and responsibly. By reinforcing classroom learning and fostering curiosity, the Media Special helps students develop critical thinking and independence while ensuring every child has equitable access to books and educational tools.
Music at SRE provides children with essential academic, social, and emotional benefits that support their overall development. Learning songs, rhythms, and instruments strengthens memory, focus, and early math and reading skills while giving students a creative outlet to express themselves. Our Music program also encourages teamwork and builds confidence as children collaborate and perform together. By exposing our students to a wide range of musical styles and cultures, our music education broadens their understanding of the world and enriches the school community through joyful performances and shared experiences.
The Physical Education Department of Broward County Public Schools believes that every student, from kindergarten through grade 12 should have the opportunity to participate in quality physical education. It is the unique role of quality physical education programs to help all students develop health-related fitness, physical competence, cognitive understanding, and positive attitudes about physical activity so that they can adopt healthy and physically active lifestyles. Quality physical education programs are also important because they provide learning experiences that meet youngsters' developmental needs, which in turn helps to improve their mental alertness, academic performance, and readiness and enthusiasm for learning.
Students should become physically educated so that they: - learn skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities - are physically fit - participate regularly in physical activity - know the implications of and benefits from involvement in physical activity - value physical activity and its contributions to a healthy lifestyle
Spanish as a specials class at SRE offers valuable academic, cultural, and cognitive benefits that support students’ growth. Early exposure to a second language strengthens memory, problem-solving, and listening skills while laying the foundation for future language learning. Learning Spanish helps students appreciate diverse cultures and fosters empathy and global awareness from a young age. It also boosts confidence as children practice communicating in new ways and explore connections between languages. We take pride at SRE in introducing Spanish early, giving students a meaningful advantage in becoming flexible thinkers, effective communicators, and engaged global citizens.
